Lev Manovich comes to Danmark
Russian born Lev Manovich is one of the most respected theoreticians
in the field of digital aesthetic today, and unavoidable for anyone
interested in digital art. Manovichs principle work is his
Language of New Media (2001), an unusually well researched
and thought through presentation of the so-called new media:
the principals of digitalisation and its roots, as well as its aesthetic
and cultural consequences.
Manovich is also an active artist, and has since last year toured
Europe with his installation Soft Cinema. Soft Cinema is
a kind of self-propelled multi-media machine that combines images,
music and narrative voices in a system of rules that Manovich has
programmed. Soft Cinema has been shown at ZKM (Zentrum für
Kunst und Medienteknologie) in Karlsruhe, Transmediale 03 in Berlin
and DEAF 03 (Dutch Electronic Art Festival) in Rotterdam, to name
but a few. Manovich is a researcher at the University of California,
San Diego, where he probably isnt seen very often if you consider
how extensive his tour of lectures has been this year. The tour
will make stops in Copenhagen and Århus. By Thomas Petersen
and Kristine Ploug.
