FAR AWAY SO CLOSE

Obviously, when it comes to the experience of web based activities and communities, the location of the author can often seem arbitrary. What do national boundaries and physical location mean in digital space? Even though we at Artificial deal with the international digital art scene as a whole, also offline work, we have our roots in Copenhagen, Denmark and have a special interest in the development of the scene for computer based art forms in our region. Our identity and outlook is still rooted in and molded by national agendas and political conditions - in some respects more than ever.

We want to learn more about which artists are active in our region, what they are doing and why. How do artists work within the particular conditions in this region? For this reason we have launched the interview series '10*10. 10 Questions for 10 Nordic Artists'. The idea is to let the interview questions find their own way from artist to artist instead of taking a top-down decision on a group of artists. This way we can sidestep the restrictions in our own particular outlook and hopefully generate new insight about the field we wouldn't otherwise be able to get. We hope that the practitioners in the region can benefit from the attention and information. Enjoy.

ARTICLES:

10 *10. 10 QUESTIONS FOR 10 NORDIC ARTISTS
Artificial sets out to dig an alternative route through the activities on the Nordic scene for computer based art. We handed Norwegian artist Trine Eidsmo a set of 10 questions and she will in turn pass them on to an artist of her choice. This artist will choose a new artist ... and so forth. http://www.artificial.dk/articles/10x10trine.htm

STARS FADING ON THE WEB
Artificial has previously explored how stars are extensively used as elements in digital artworks. Coincidentally, stars on the web also turned out to be a great interest of Russian artist Olia Lialina. Thomas Petersen talked to Olia about her peculiar interest and about the ephemeral nature of web expressions.

NET.WORKS:

This is our catalogue of computer based art we can recommend. You'll find net art, software art, classics, and a continuously updated list of new pieces. This week we have one recommendation:

PARK
An oddly intriguing game-like environment by American artist Patrick Smith. The universe unfolds much like a point-and-click game, but has no apparent goals other than exploring a small world in your own time. Really worth immersing yourself into. /TP

EXTRA:

WEB PORTFOLIOS AS ART
Sometimes the web portfolios of artists and designers are created as artworks in there own right. Even the portfolios of artists who are working with non-digital media can shine brighter than the initial artistic content. Here are 2 magnificent examples:

DANISH ARTIST: THOMAS FOS

AMERICAN ARTIST: ESAO ANDREWS
